On 17 August 2012, the official notarial kick-off for DAYONE as a design agency for Mobile UX/UI took place.

And just like the topic of mobile, we have also grown and matured over the years. For many of our clients, whether it be Volkswagen, Deutsche Bahn, or KIND, we have become a long-term partner. Strategically, in terms of content, and in design. Far beyond the boundaries of good UX/UI.

On the occasion of our anniversary in 2022, we are providing entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, team leads, and designers with a source of inspiration through our book "YEARTEN", demonstrating how to create long-term value with a multidimensional understanding of sustainability and design.

In 10 chapters, we would like to share our knowledge of what we have learned from the past for the future and answer, among other things, the following questions:

Contents of the book

What is design?

Design is at the heart of how we approach every challenge and problem, whether it’s about business ideas and models, digital products, or the right team structure and culture development.

Define positioning and differentiation

When we realized that our clients’ feedback wasn’t just about the good results, but especially about our empathetic, structured, and logical way of working, it became clear that how we do our work was the key moment to define our positioning.

When we realized that our clients’ feedback was not only about the quality of our results, but above all about our empathetic, structured, and logical way of working, we understood that the question of how we do our work was the defining moment to make our positioning clear and distinct.

To create a brand

Today, the name DAYONE seems to make perfect sense. For 80–90% of our clients, we work with a brand-new idea, a new challenge, a blank slate. But the origin story is a little less perfect. From a business plan competition to an event series in a Freiburg nightclub to a scribble in a notebook, the name DAYONE has its own story.

How did organic growth turn into a sustainable company culture? And what does it really mean to run a business sustainably, beyond the ecological aspect?

A lived culture

How can we keep bringing new people on board while ensuring consistent ways of working and strong results? This has been a constant focus for us, as we knew that our founders and “DNA carriers” would be less able to stay involved in day-to-day project work and operations with every new team member joining.

Develop an organization

We want to foster the ideal of shared responsibility within our team. We want to be a team of collaborators and partners, not bosses and employees. We want a team of people who are committed and passionate about their work, ready to take on our clients’ challenges. And we want to keep strengthening the culture for our current team and future members.

Lead and build a team

After ten years of consistent practice, improvement, and experimentation, we have refined our approach around three principles: leading by example, situational leadership, and clear areas of responsibility.

Utilise finances

For a long time, finance felt more like a necessary evil to us. Today, our financial philosophy is built on three principles: transparency, empowerment, and accountability.

The internet of the next generation

In 2022, we stand on the brink of a technological revolution. The rise and gradual adoption of augmented reality, web3, NFTs, blockchain, crypto, and the metaverse have sparked a new discussion about opportunities and risks for brands, businesses, people, and governments.
